Measurements at a distance:

the missing link to chronic monitoring

Continuous monitoring by remote sensing

Remote sensing comprises several sensing mechanisms for the continuous monitoring of vital signs. They all operate without physical contact to the subject, hence the term noncontact sensing that is sometimes used.

Remote sensing is a concept that comprises multiple sensing techniques, some of which have gained increased interest recently.

Societal impact

The field of remote sensing holds great promise for lifelong and chronic monitoring of vital signs. Key to achieving that goal is the invisible and completely unobtrusive integration into everyday objects, such as bed sheets, office/car chairs, couch or PC screen. In this case, the strength is not in the quality of the acquired signals, but the longitudinal nature, with the potential to reveal slowly changing patterns – possibly symptoms from underlying physiological changes. The analysis of such datasets, currently largely unexplored, will provide new insights into normal versus pathological patterns of changes over very long periods of time.

Another area where remote sensing could play an important role, is in monitoring of patients that cannot withstand continuous skin contact, such as neonates.

Continuous monitoring

in Moore4Medical

Continuous monitoring will be key in the development of new patient-centric service concepts with low workload and high diagnostic yield for long term use at home by non-professionals. These service concepts fall under the umbrella of future Digital Healthcare services. Contactless sensing and trust are essential for patient compliance to long term monitoring at home. Contactless bed-monitoring provides good opportunities for unobtrusive sensing during a long period of the day and without patients having to wear devices. End-to-end (E2E) security and privacy of health related data increases confidence that the data is protected, thus promoting the acceptance of the system.

In Moore4Medical two platforms, a bed-monitoring application platform and a data security and privacy technology platform will be developed and seamlessly integrated into a demonstrator for the detection of atrial fibrillation (AFib) in patients under suspicion of AFib, and for follow-up of patients after cardiac surgery. Contactless bed-monitoring provides good opportunities for unobtrusive sensing during a long period of the day and without patients having to wear devices. In summary:

  • The bed-monitoring platform is an eco-system of devices communicating with one another to optimize the monitoring process, jointly gather and store sensor data from the same patient;
  • The data security and privacy platform provides modular solutions for ensuring E2E security and privacy of Health and Medical data, spanning the full spectrum of system components and addressing all relevant threats. End-to-end (E2E) security and privacy of health related data increases confidence that the data is protected, thus promoting the acceptance of the system.
  • The AFib detection demonstrator uses large-scale data processing pipelines comprising signal-processing and machine learning–based algorithms for detecting cardiac disorders. It will assess the efficacy of the bed-monitoring platform sensors in the detection and follow-up of AFib during in-hospital out-of-hospital clinical trials.
